Ms.Rosemary Sleator

Speech Therapist

.

I work as a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, Northern Ireland, UK. My key responsibilities are the assessment and management of children with speech difficulties associated with Cleft Palate. I also manage children with speech difficulties associated with velopharyngeal dysfunction in the absence of Cleft Palate. I deliver training packages to parents and professionals supporting children with speech and language difficulties.

My interest in Cleft Palate stems from working as a Speech and Language Therapist in Nepal from 1999 – 2007 as part of a team working with children and adults with Cleft Palate. I was also involved in developing Speech Therapy services in Nepal for children with Cleft Palate through the development of a training and support programme to Nepali Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants working as part of a dedicated Cleft Palate program now based at the Nepal Cleft and Burn Centre, Kirtipur, Kathmandu.

In 2008 and 2011 I led teams of Speech and Language Therapists from the UK to further support this training program. In 2014, I conducted a small research study with the Speech Assistants of the Nepal Cleft and Burn Centre as part of my MSc study investigating the effect of listening training on Nepali Speech Assistants’ ability to identify cleft speech errors.
